Kalyan is no different from any other midmith in the current era. Involuntarily conscripted into the Salbasha Volunteer Corps by corrupt puppet leaders, they have been a servant of the Salbasha since the age of three, their clan name and kith name stripped from them. They spend the majority of their young life as one of Jaromir’s stewards, until a string of unfortunate happenstance puts them at the end of their leader’s blade.Kalyan dies young, alone and unfulfilled, but oblivion has not yet come for them, as they find themself awake in some strange afterlife, a concept that is utterly alien to their culture.

A conscript in the Salbasha Volunteer Corps and lifelong friend of Kalyan, Vala is devotedly loyal to the Salbasha. Vala rose through the ranks throughout the civil wars, ultimately gaining the favour of the Salfa herself. It was Vala who led the dissolution of the Clave, ultimately never learning the fate of her close friend.After the timeskip, she has fallen hard, betrayed by her leaders and dropped like a useless toy. A call to the capital and a task from the Salfa seems to offer her a change in fates, though she soon finds herself grappling with the meaning of her blind loyalty against mounting feelings of disillusionment.
